I do wish that the romance between Nat and John was not so fast and easy. Otherwise, the reading is pretty good, so perhaps it makes this fault is even more glaring. As the first one that I’ve listened to as an audiobook, I found that the narrator was extremely distracting in the way that she pauses before and therefore emphasizes every “I said,” “she said,” and “he said.” I’ve read many, many audiobooks and have never experienced this before. The plots hold my attention and it’s fun to imagine living in a place like Cranberry Island. ![]() ![]() I continue to really like the setting, the Inn and the characters in general. This is the 3rd book in the series (and I’m reading them in order). ![]() ![]() ![]() They are the heart and soul of this book. In terms of worldbuilding this was not rigorous-like, where was the ham coming from?-but that’s a lesser concern of mine. There has been a mass infertility problem which means that the population of the world is about 300 quite old people and two teenagers, the last IVF babies. So The Quiet at the End of the World is set in London after the apocalypse. Also I am sadly going on hiatus, which I’ll write more about at the end of the post ![]() I wasn’t entirely satisfied with how she engaged with the ethical implications of some of the topics in the book, but that is okay. The reflections on objects and impermanence were interesting too. Lauren James is very good at surprises, and ultimately that was probably my favourite thing about her new book, The Quiet at the End of the World. ![]() ![]() I particularly like that although Brad is the big, hulking jock, Sebastian is very much the titular toppy and really leads things in their relationship. ![]() The story is crazy sexy, but there is also a sweetness and a tenderness here. Brad is desperately trying to figure himself out and Sebastian is there to guide him along his way. I think what I like best here is the dynamic between these two characters. So I was super excited to see that it was released in audio, especially with one of my favorite narrators, Nick J. I originally read it almost four years ago, when it was first released, and it remains near the top of my list. Frat Boy & Toppy is one of my favorite new adult, college romances. ![]() ![]() ![]() First, Stuart there is a big set up for Stuart to meet up with another little person, a girl named Harriet. I found the last part of the book strange and startlingly abrupt. But this is a kid’s book, so I can let that go. White sometimes gives “reasonable” explanations for Stuart’s little things - such as ice skates made of paper clips and coins made of foil, but sometimes there is no explanation at all for things (a working car with gas engine for a mouse?!?). Most of the adventures would be enjoyable for kids (such as the sailing race on the pond). ![]() His book is for the most part a collection of mostly unrelated adventures that generally don’t build on each other.
